Baroka FC heaped further misery on Cape Town City with a 2-0 victory at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Tuesday.
City provided an opening scare with Judas Moseamedi running onto a long ball before finding a deft touch to hit the upright in the opening two minutes.
Playing at home, Baroka battled to find their footing and their only way to goal was through a counterattacking approach.
The Citizens missed another opportunity after Lyle Lakay shot inches wide from Ayanda Dlamini’s goal after 10 minutes.
As they continued to pepper shots at Dlamini, they were pegged back in the process after Mpho Kgaswane smashed home a free-kick in the 35th minute.
The Cape Town outfit came out firing in the second half and almost found the equalizer, but Moseamedi failed to profit from a headed effort.
Bakgaga, meanwhile, were looking to extend their lead and came close on a few occasions with their usual shots from range.
City made their first change, bringing on Sibusiso Masina for a rather ineffective Surprise Ralani, who struggled to get into the groove of the game in the 69th minute.
As the game wound down, Thamsanqa Mkhize broke free on the right and tried to pull a cut back with a cross-cum-shot, but Dlamini managed to evade the danger.
They continued with a similar chance later on, but this time youngster Shaun Roberts was unable to get the best out of Dlamini.
The home side needed only one chance to grab their second, and they duly got it and made it count as Kgaswane neatly tucked home into the bottom corner after 88 minutes.
The win stabilises Baroka's chances for a top-eight spot at the end of the season, while it’s four defeats on the trot for McCarthy and company.
