Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Pule Ekstein says he enjoyed watching Siphiwe Tshabalala and Teko Modise in Soweto derbies of the past.
Ekstein is looking forward to playing in this weekend’s derby against Amakhosi's rivals Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium, as he hopes to make a mark like Modise and Tshabalala did.
Tshabalala, in particular, has been one of the stars of this clash in the PSL era and marked his 30th consecutive appearance in the derby when he featured in the goalless draw in the first half of the season.
The former Free State Stars player, who has four goals against the Buccaneers, has not missed a derby since a 2-2 draw on November 24, 2007.
“I looked at Siphiwe Tshabalala and Teko Modise. I admired them when it came to playing in the Soweto Derby,” Ekstein tells KickOff.com.
“The derby motivates every player and that’s why you see when a player gets a chance he tries to play well,” he adds.
Amakhosi will go into Saturday’s derby just one point behind their rivals. Supporters will be hoping that the sides do not approach the game with caution. Both sides have a chance of winning the league title, so it’s expected that they will have a full go at one another and, more importantly, there will be goals.
