Brighton Mhlongo says Orlando Pirates has reason to believe they can win the title

Chippa United goalkeeper Brighton Mhlongo believes Orlando Pirates are capable of winning the Absa Premiership title this season.

On loan to Chippa from Pirates, Mhlongo says he has been impressed with how the team has been playing under coach Micho Sredojevic, but says everyone in the side deserves credit for the improved performances this campaign.

Last season the Soweto giants finished outside the top eight for the first time in the PSL era.

The Buccaneers are now in second place on the table after they beat the Chilli Boys 4-2 in an exciting clash at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Sunday. They are four points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns with eight matches to go, a clear sign that it’s going to be an interesting race to the finish.

While those in the Pirates camp are playing down their chances of winning the title, Mhlongo says anything is possible.

“Pirates has been doing well and credit should be given to the whole family because it does not take one man to turn things around. It takes a collective effort, so credit must go to everyone,” Mhlongo says.

“The coach has been voted coach of the month, which shows they have been working well together as a team to reach a common goal. Anything is possible with the way they are playing and they are not far off. I would not be surprised if they make it all the way to the top. We will see what happens at the end of the season.”

Chippa, meanwhile, are in ninth place on the standings, hoping to do enough to finish in the top eight.

“I strongly believe we can finish [in the top eight]. With the hard work and dedication we put in, I don’t see us finishing outside the top eight. We just have to keep pushing because the three points will come. It is possible to finish in a high position.”
