Vilakazi targets first league title

Sibusiso Vilakazi would love to get the feeling of winning the Absa Premiership title for the first time in his career.
He’s watched other players lift the trophy, including some of his Mamelodi Sundowns team-mates, who have won it on a few occasions in the past, so he'd do absolutely anything right now to ensure he gets his hands on the biggest prize in local football.
Vilakazi left Bidvest Wits for Sundowns last season hoping he would finally realise his dream of winning the league title, but it was his former employers who edged the Brazilians to the championship crown.
The Bafana Bafana midfielder has a good chance with Sundowns, who are currently at the top of the standings with a lead of four points.
Sundowns, though, dropped four valuable points in their home matches against Free State Stars and SuperSport United last week and will have to get back to winning ways to avoid losing the title to either Orlando Pirates or Kaizer Chiefs.
“When you start football, you play with a purpose and ambition. And you want to win certain trophies and you want to say 'I have won the title one or two times'. That’s the major one and there’s also the Champions League and the Club World Cup. Those are the things you want to win,” Vilakazi tells KickOff.com.
“It would be amazing [to win it], not only me but the team as well because there are other players in the team who have not won it. Some have won it and would like to add. I find myself in an interesting zone and I would like to be in this position whereby we are always trying to win titles.”
Vilakazi admits he used to envy Sundowns players when he was on the outside looking in. Now that he is part of the side, he is determined to win as many trophies as possible.
“To be honest, when I was on the opposite side it was quite amazing to see the guys winning trophies. It motivated me and I wanted to be part of this group.”
Sundowns will be back in action on Friday, when they take on AmaZulu at King Zwelithini Stadium (18h00).
