Maritzburg United boss Fadlu Davids downplays title talk after win over Platinum Stars

Maritzburg United coach Fadlu Davids has little enthusiasm for suggestions his team are in title contention.

The Team of Choice were briefly second on the table on Friday night following a 2-1 home win over cellar dwellers Platinum Stars, but have since slipped to fourth spot.

Maritzburg, with 34 points from 22 games, are only six points behind log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns with eight matches left.

Davids, however, has reiterated his priority is to secure a top-eight finish with 43 points.

"No," he said when asked if United are going for gold.

"We are going for the target now of 40 points, 43 points to secure the top eight and that is what we are focused on now.

"We have a young squad and you can’t get them talking about the title and top five and all of this... it is top eight and getting a place better than what we achieved last season which was seven.

"To try and achieve sixth place will be a fantastic achievement for the club."

Meanwhile, Davids is happy for Andrea Fileccia, who hit a brace in a man-of-the-match display at Harry Gwala Stadium to take his goal tally to six for the season.

The Belgian, who was signed last term carrying an injury by Ernst Middendorp, has become the team's main striker following the recent departure of Evans Rusike to SuperSport United.

“We knew he was a quality player. We knew when he signed he came here with an injury, a very bad injury,” Davids said of Fileccia.

“It was about managing him. Under Middendorp he came back and he tore his quad. You know it was about getting him back slowly but surely and not about rushing him.

“It is the same about [Bokang] Thlone now. It is the same like [William] Twala. They come from inactivity and it’s about building their minutes.

“It’s my responsibility that I don’t injure them, playing them too much too soon, and that is exactly what it was with Fileccia.

“It was waiting for his moment. He has got a fantastic work ethic and I’m happy for him that he got two goals.”

Davids’ men, unbeaten in six matches in all competitions, are next in action against SuperSport on Saturday afternoon at Lucas Moripe Stadium.
