Orlando Pirates came from a goal down to thoroughly outplay Chippa United for a 4-2 victory in the Absa Premiership.
With high stakes involved, the Buccaneers looked for an early lead after Innocent Maela tested Brighton Mhlongo with a shot from the edge of the box.
Another opportunity fell their way when Justin Shonga lined up for a free-kick, which he fired way past Mhlongo.
A defensive lapse by Ntsikelelo Nyauza allowed Thabo Rakhale to play in Sizwe Mdlinzo, who missed from close range with only Mhlongo to beat.
They finally got rewarded after a delightful ball over the top of the defence found Xolani Machupu, who made no mistake with a first-time volley in the 18th minute.
The Sea Robbers were not relenting and hit back instantaneously from the penalty spot after Paseka Mako was caught handling a cross by Bernard Morrison.
The Ghanaian stepped up to send Mhlongo the wrong way and level the scores in the 26th minute to revive the spirit amongst their faithful in the stands.
Mark Mayambela looked to restore the lead for the Chilli Boys, but struck his shot wide of goal after 43 minutes.
Morrison targeted a brace and came close two minutes from the break, but failed to place his shot on target.
They kept piling on the pressure when Shonga found space in the box, but shot wide of goal in the 53rd minute.
Milutin Sredojevic made his first change in the form of Xola Mlambo for Marshall Munetsi in the 56th minute.
With the midway stages gone, Bucs went in front for the first time in the game after Shonga made amends for his earlier misses with a close-range finish after a goalmouth scramble in the 73rd minute.
Teboho Moloi threw his last dice, bringing on Katlego Mashego for Mayambela, and was rewarded with the equaliser, which Mashego guided past an on-rushing Jackson Mabokgwane minutes from the end.
However, their hopes of a point were ended by Thembinkosi Lorch, who rose highest to head home Maela’s cross two minutes later.
They were not done, though, as Shonga who completed his brace with a thunderous strike from an acute angle in added time to reduce the gap on the league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns to four points.
