Mamelodi Sundowns defender Wayne Arendse says he still has a lot to offer the club

Posted: 25 February 2018 Time: 12:00

Experienced defender Wayne Arendse believes he still has a lot to offer at Mamelodi Sundowns.

Once a key member in central defence alongside fellow veteran Thabo Nthethe as Sundowns won major trophies, the 33-year-old is now watching most of their matches from the bench or the stands.

He has made 12 appearances in all competitions and has only featured once in 2018. He last started a game against Cape Town City at Loftus Stadium in December.

Coach Pitso Mosimane has been using the likes of Motjeka Madisha, Bangaly Soumahoro and Ricardo Nascimento in central defence.

“Obviously I have not played as much games as I wanted. The team has been doing well, so I can’t complain. They have been winning and I am there for the guys. When my chance comes, I will be ready for it,” Arendse tells

“Obviously you need to believe in your capabilities and believe that you still have a lot to offer. That’s why we are still here at Sundowns. The coach said you can take out anyone and he expects a performance of the highest level from everyone at any given time. But like I said, the guys have been doing well and we have to wait for our chance.”

With younger players such Madisha and Rivaldo Coetzee in the squad, it will be harder for Arendse to play going forward. But he believes his experience can give him an edge.

“I would not say it makes it harder because obviously, you have the experience on your side. You know what to do in certain situations, but it’s just about rotation, consistency and those sorts of things.”
