Free State Stars and AmaZulu cancelled each other out as they played to a 0-0 draw at Goble Park.
Both sides are still hunting down their top-eight objectives this season, and the way they started showed that they were determined to not let it pass them by.
Usuthu, who come into the match off a derby loss, fired in the first shot on goal courtesy of Siyabonga Nomvethe, but it failed to hit the target.
After a slow opening spell, chances from both sides came in dribs and drabs as they see out the remainder of the half on a goalless slate.
The veteran Nomvethe combined on the edge of the box with Simphiwe Lumkwana, but shot over the goal of Badra Ali Sangare.
The Durban side were looking dangerous on the counterattack and almost caught the hosts out on a few occasions.
Cavin Johnson decided to freshen up the team with changes in the form of Rhulani Manzini and Phumlani Gumede.
Ea Lla Koto looked to steal the points in added time, but Sthembiso Dlamini failed to beat Siyabonga Mbatha.
In the end, both sides settled for a draw that appeased them in their top eight plights, with Stars moving into the top four.
