Mamelodi Sundowns’ veteran defender Wayne Arendse feels Free State Stars should be taken seriously as Absa Premiership title candidates.

Stars visit league leaders Sundowns at Loftus Stadium tonight (19h30), knowing that a victory away from home would put them just three points behind the former African champions.

Arendse, who has not been getting a lot of game-time this season, says Ea Lla Koto cannot be ignored in the race to win the biggest prize in local football.

“People are not really watching Free State Stars. They are in the chasing pack, just behind Chiefs and Pirates, so we need to watch them very carefully. The Free State Stars coach [Luc Eymael] is a very good coach and he knows what tactics to use in certain games, but we have been here before and we know how to play these sort of league games,” the former Santos defender tells

“We know that we need these three points. Obviously we are playing at home, so it’s going to be tough, no doubt about it. But we are ready for it and we will look for that goal. Once we score and keep it tight at the back, then that’s the game,” he adds.
