Brighton Mhlongo was surprised by his move to Chippa United from Orlando Pirates

Brighton Mhlongo has admitted that he was surprised by his move from Orlando Pirates to Chippa United, but then realised that it’s a blessing in disguise for him.

The goalkeeper joined the Chilli Boys on a loan deal after a difficult campaign with the Buccaneers last term. He made 16 appearances for the Soweto giants in all competitions and conceded 23 times, keeping only three clean sheets. It was a season he and fellow goalkeepers Jackson Mabokgwane and Siyabonga Mpontshane came under fire for some of their performances between the sticks.

Following Pirates’ signing of Wayne Sandilands from Mamelodi Sundowns before the start of the current campaign, Mhlongo then made a loan move to the Eastern Cape to join the ambitious Chippa.

There was confusion as to whether the move is permanent or temporary, but the goalkeeper has confirmed he is on loan.

“Obviously it came as a surprise, but I had a chat with the chairman [Irvin Khoza]. He showed me the pros and cons of everything that has been happening. I am still grateful for the support he showed me and I know I will always be part of them,” he tells

“Yes, the move was a surprise, but at the same time I took it as a blessing in disguise to say I need to start all over again and rediscover myself and just showcase my God-given talent.”

He adds: “It’s a loan deal. At the end of the season, by law, I need to go back to my mother club. Right now my job is to do well for Chippa United. I would love to focus on getting game-time and to repay the faith both chairmen [Chippa Mpengesii and Khoza] have shown in me. I need to keep working hard and the rest will follow. Obviously Pirates will forever be in my family, so only God knows what will happen in the future.”

Mhlongo, who has been competing with Nigerian international Daniel Akpeyi for a place in the starting line-up, has made eight appearances for the Chilli Boys this season, keeping five clean sheets.

He will be hoping to get another opportunity when Chippa host Pirates at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Sunday (15h30).
