Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane does not want to rely on favours in the title race

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane is happy to be in a position where he does not need to rely on anyone for favours in the title race.

Sundowns have a lead of four points at the top of the Absa Premiership standings and know that they will have no one to blame but themselves should they fail to claim an eighth league title in the PSL era.

It’s in their hands right now and a chance to edge closer to the biggest prize in South African football will be presented when they host Free State Stars tomorrow at Loftus, before taking on Tshwane rivals SuperSport United at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday.

Collecting six points is the target because the likes of Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Stars are ready to pounce if the Brazilians drop points.

“It [being on top] is an advantage because you are on top and you have points. When you are on top everybody wants to shoot at you,” Mosimane said.

“Somewhere, somehow we have a feeling that when we play everybody wants us to drop points. [But] I would not want to be in another position. If you asked me would I like to swap positions? Would I rather be five points behind with 10 games to go or I’d like to have five points with 10 games to go? I want the five points, I would like to be where I am. How do I know those people will lose the next three or four games?

“Yes, the pressure is there [at the top], which is okay, but it’s in our hands. We don’t want favours, not now.”

Sundowns edged Stars 2-1 in the first half of the season in a tight game played in the Free State and can expect another difficult 90 minutes against Ea Lla Koto, who have been the surprise package this season.
