Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes claims Phil Jones and Chris Smalling not good enough

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes feels the defensive pairing of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones has created a nervous aura around the starting XI.

Since the injury to Ivory Coast international Eric Bailly, Smalling has stepped in for United alongside the erratic Jones and the Red Devils' Premier League form has suffered as result.

Glaring defensive errors in the recent away defeats to Tottenham and Newcastle had led Scholes to believe the England international's aren't able to compete at the highest level.

"United have looked very nervous," Scholes told BT Sports. "Jones and Smalling, anything around them, they've been nervous.

"As soon as they play against quality, they’re all over the place. This has been indicative of their last few weeks. Shoddy defending."

Second-placed United currently trail league leaders Manchester City by 16 points.
