Johannes ready for Confed Cup war

Cape Town City captain Robyn Johannes says he’s itching to lead the Citizens in their CAF Confederation Cup second leg preliminary round tie against Young Buffaloes at Athlone Stadium tonight.

Johannes returns after spending a “frustrating” two weeks on the sidelines due to suspension for two yellow card offences during their 1-0 Absa Premiership loss to Mamelodi Sundowns.

The experienced defender subsequently missed City’s 1-0 win over Bidvest Wits in a Nedbank Cup last 32 clash, as well as a 1-0 defeat to Kaizer Chiefs in the league at FNB Stadium on Saturday.

“I’m as ready as can be and can’t wait to lead the team again,” Johannes told KickOff.com.

“The last two weeks has been frustrating as there’s nothing one can do but just to serve one’s time.

“I also feel that the nature of the offences didn’t really warrant the punishment I got, but that’s in the past and I’m back and fully focused on our next game,” said the 31-year-old.

City have a slender 1-0 advantage over their Swazi opponents, thanks to a late winner from Nana Akosah-Bempah in the first leg.

Johannes wants City to make the most of their home ground advantage to seal the tie and advance in this competition.

“We also want to wipe out the loss to Chiefs over the weekend. That’s the one thing that I like with the games coming thick and fast. But it’s important for us to respect our opponents and not get too ahead of ourselves,” Johannes concluded.
