Free State Stars confident they can hold their own against Mamelodi Sundowns

Free State Stars midfielder Nhlanhla Vilakazi believes high-flying Ea Lla Koto have what it takes to upset Absa Premiership leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

Stars visit title favourites Sundowns at Loftus Stadium on Wednesday night (19h30), with the aim of keeping the title race interesting. A win for Stars would certainly make for an intriguing few months to come as the season heads towards the end.

And looking at how Ea Lla Koto have performed ever since Belgian coach Luc Eymael took over from Sammy Troughton early in the campaign, they cannot be ruled out of leaving Pretoria on Wednesday with a point, or three.

Stars, who are in fourth place, are six points behind Sundowns and would move into second spot if they get a victory.

“It’s a big one for us. As you know if we get something we can at least be number two. It will be a good thing for the team, so hopefully we can get something,” Vilakazi tells KickOff.com.

“They are beatable, but we need to have a strategy and we need to follow the coach’s instructions and hopefully things we will go our way.”

Sundowns are playing good football, with the attacking flair of players such as Percy Tau, Sibusiso Vilakazi, Themba Zwane and the recently acquired Gaston Sirino likely to prove a threat to visiting Ea Lla Koto.

“They are a good team and everyone knows, that’s why we need to get there well prepared. They’ve got quality players and a quality coach [Pitso Mosimane],” Vilakazi says.

“They are playing good football and they are confident, which makes it hard to beat them. But as you see in the PSL any team can be beaten. So we hope it will be our night.”
