Wits sink wasteful Arrows

Bidvest Wits continued their upward momentum with a 2-1 win over Golden Arrows in the KZN province on Saturday.

After a promising start from Abafana Besthende which led to a couple of half chances by Lerato Lamola in particular, they were soon on the back foot.

Bafana Bafana international Sifiso Hlanti picked out Gabadinho Mhango with a cross at the far post which the latter didn’t turn away for the opening goal after 29 minutes.

They were handed a penalty five minutes to the interval after Matome Mathiane was adjudged to have handled from Hlanti’s cross into the middle.

Replays showed that referee Victor Gomes made a poor decision as the ball struck the face of the defender.

Nonetheless, it invited Lehlohonolo Majoro to step up to the plate which he duly did to convert their second of the afternoon.

Arrows came out with a different mentality in the second half, with Yusuf Jappie eager to reduce to the deficit following a long-range shot.

At the other spectrum, Mhango turned a spate of defenders to create space for himself, but was unable to find the target after 49 minutes.

Clinton Larsen’s side were handed an opportunity to stage a come back after Lamola forced Gomes to point to the spot after being impeded by Buhle Mkhwanazi.

Zimbabwean Knox Mutizwa failed to make use of the advantage as the spot-kick came off the woodwork on the 60th minute spell.

They were given another penalty following a hasty challenge by Nazeer Allie. Limbikani Mzava stepped up to reduce the deficit after 74 minutes.

Both sides were reduced to 10-men in Jabulani Shongwe and James Keene for displaying poor sportsman ship towards one another.

In the end, it wasn’t enough as Wits held on to secure the all-important three points.
