Maritzburg United moved back in the top-four after defeating AmaZulu 2-0 in the Kwazulu-Natal derby on Friday evening.
The Team of Choice welcomed back four of their regulars in captain Bevan Fransman, Deolin Mekoa, Bandile Shandu and Siphesihle Ndlovu.
They were clear on their objectives from the word go after Andrea Fileccia found space on goal, but shot straight at Siyabonga Mbatha.
AmaZulu called Richard Ofori to make the first save through Ovidy Karuru, who raced down the right side before shooting from an acute angle.
Siyethemba Mnguni, who got a brace in the other local derby recently, missed arguably the best chance of the half after failing to direct Karuru’s delivery on goal with his head.
Mbatha, who has rescued Usuthu in recent games came to their rescue once again, after denying Fransman from a low free-kick after the half and hour mark.
He could do nothing to stop Bandile Shandu from breaking the deadlock after a swift counterattack orchestrated by Fileccia, Mekoa and Lebohang Maboe set-up him nicely five minutes to the break.
The second half got off to a slow start, and despite the few half-chances created, neither goalkeepers was forced to make a save.
Trailing by a goal, Usuthu turned to the bench and brought on Jabulani Ncobeni for Samuel Darpoh and Siyabonga Nomvethe replaced Sduduzo Dlamini.
Their come back hopes were dealt a blow after Butholezwe Ncube got his marching orders for a dangerous tackle in the 63rd minute.
The home side almost got a second after Mekoa’s left-footed curler struck the post late on. They eventually grabbed it in added time with a simple tap-in by Ndlovu following William Twala’s tee-up.
