AmaZulu midfielder Michael Morton feels KZN derbies deserve to get more attention

AmaZulu midfielder Michael Morton feels the derbies in KwaZulu-Natal should get more attention.

Usuthu recently played Golden Arrows and while he feels there was an effort from AmaZulu to hype up the game it did not show in the stands. Tonight AmaZulu face another KZN rival in Maritzburg United at Harry Gwala Stadium (20h00), but there is hardly any excitement around the game.

“I know the build-up with the last KZN derby against Arrows, AmaZulu put in a lot of effort to try get a bigger sort of spotlight on the game. I don’t know if they succeeded much, [because] it was not a sell out crowd or anything like that,” Morton says.

“I think it should bring attention to the province, especially with the AmaZulu-Arrows derby because it’s close neighbours. The Maritzburg-AmaZulu one is a bit far removed, but there’s still a lot of interest in two teams that are well supported.”

Morton will not get an opportunity to play against his former side due to suspension, but he has stressed the importance of winning so that they continue their rise up the table.

At one point Usuthu were considered relegation candidates, yet now they are in eighth place and will move up two spots if they win tonight.

“It’s a big game because if we beat them we jump them [on the standings] and then we jump into the top eight as well. It’s crazy how this season has gone because a few weeks ago people were talking about relegation, but you win three games and you find yourself in the top eight. That’s how it is.”

“It’s a big game, not just because it’s a KZN derby but also the impact it has on the league for us.”

Morton played with Maritzburg coach Fadlu Davids in his first season with the Team of Choice in 2011 and has praised the mentor for the work he is doing at the moment.

“I like the look of Maritzburg. What Fadlu has done is great. I played with Fadlu in my first season at Maritzburg, so I know him well. I like watching them and they are a good side, so it won’t be an easy one tonight.”
