Frederic Nsabiyumva says Jomo Sono made him the footballer he is today and is grateful the Jomo Cosmos boss allowed him to join topflight side Chippa United last month.
The centre-back became the third Cosmos player to move to Chippa in the January transfer window after Linda Mntambo and Mxolisi Macuphu.
Nsabiyumva played his first game for the Chilli Boys in a 2-0 win over third-tier side Phiva Young Stars in the last-32 of the Nedbank Cup at Kabokweni Stadium on Saturday.
The Burundian, who had a trial at Israeli outfit Hapoel Acre FC in December, is in good spirits in Port Elizabeth.
“I’m feeling good because it affords me the opportunity to play in the PSL again. I think it’s a good career move for me going forward,” he told Cosmos' website.
Nsabiyumva initially linked up with Ezenkosi in 2014 from Vital’O FC, and went on to register over 100 appearances for the National First Division outfit.
He said club owner Sono has served as father figure to him in South Africa.
“First of all, I want to say thank you again to Dr. E.M. Sono for the opportunity because frankly he made me who I am today.
“He discovered me, nurtured me and treated me like his son. I am going to miss him as well as my teammates. We had a very cordial relationship and shared fun times together.
“Not forgetting the technical staff and the entire Jomo Cosmos family.”
He added: “I am used to life in Jozi but now I must try to adapt to life in my new environment as quickly as possible.”
