New SuperSport United striker Evans Rusike says Orlando Pirates asked about his availability last season

New SuperSport United striker Evans Rusike says he was not disappointed when a move to Orlando Pirates did not materialise last season.

Rusike was told about the Buccaneers’ interest in his services and he had hoped that his former club Maritzburg United would agree terms with the Soweto giants, but that did not happen.

He finally made a move in the January transfer window, joining Matsatsantsa as a replacement for Jeremy Brockie, who is now in the colours of Mamelodi Sundowns.

Reports also linked Rusike with a move to Pirates’ Soweto rivals Kaizer Chiefs, but he knows nothing about that.

“There was a time last season when I was told by the office that Pirates made contact. They asked for my services, but I don’t know about any other team being interested in me,” Rusike tells

“I was just hoping they [Maritzburg and Pirates] would agree club-to-club terms. I was not disappointed that the move did not happen. I am a Christian and I believe everything happens for a reason. If it’s going to happen, it’s going to happen and no one will stand in the way of it happening.”

Rusike bagged his first goal for Matsatsantsa in their 4-2 victory over Bloemfontein Celtic in their last Absa Premiership match.

“My focus now is to do well with the team and help the team finish in the top eight and I believe it’s possible for us to do that. That’s the other reason I came here. I saw the way they play and I was so inspired to play with them. We have a great squad,” he says.
