KickOff.com editor Tshepang Mailwane feels Percy Tau and Itumeleng Khune are the frontrunners for the PSL Footballer of the Season award.
There’s still a long way to go before the season comes to an end, but there are pictures that are a lot clearer than others.
While it’s unclear who will win the Absa Premiership trophy or who will get relegated, the footballer of the season award should not be as difficult to predict right now.
Come the end of the season, should there be no injury, I can bet my house that Mamelodi Sundowns forward Percy Tau and Kaizer Chiefs captain Itumeleng Khune will be nominees for the big award.
Here’s why I think these two players are head and shoulders above the rest this season:
Nominated for the PSL Players’ Player of the Season award last season, Tau has taken his game to another level in the current campaign. When the season started, Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane was on a mission to make Tau the footballer of the season and he is definitely on the right track to achieving that goal. Tau has taken over from Khama Billiat as the Brazilians’ talisman upfront, and despite being 23, the left-footed player has been able to carry the responsibility on his shoulders. With eight goals and nine assists in all competitions, Tau has been involved in more goals than any other player in the league and will no doubt contribute more going into the final third of the campaign. He is now a more composed figure in the final third of the pitch.
Winning the footballer of the season prize would no doubt enhance his chances of going to one of Europe's big five leagues, which is where Mosimane wants to see him playing.
The Amakhosi skipper’s man of the match award in the Nedbank Cup last 32 encounter against Golden Arrows yesterday showed just why he is such an important player for the club. In a world where goalkeepers are not always given the credit they deserve, Khune has managed to grab the headlines with some of his match-winning performances. In fact there have been a number of occasions where, if it were not for his saves, Amakhosi would have been on the losing side.
In the 23 matches Khune has played in all competitions this season, he has conceded 11 times and has kept 13 clean sheets. Chiefs have the best defence in the league with 12 goals conceded and key to that has been the form of the Bafana Bafana shot stopper. He’s surely a favourite to win the goalkeeper of the season award and is a top candidate for the big one as well.
