SA Players abroad: Goals for Lebo Mothiba, Ricardo Nunes and Luther Singh

Lebo Mothiba netted his first Ligue 1 goal upon his return to Lille, with two South Africans also on target over the weekend in this week’s players abroad wrap.

The South African youngster came on as a substitute for his seventh appearance of the season as Belgian club Sint-Truiden went down 3-0 to Gent in their league match-up. The result leaves Sint-Truiden 10th in the league with four games to go.

Dolly has slowly cemented himself in Montpellier’s starting line-up, again being handed a start as his side took on bottom-placed Metz. The South African played 68 minutes as his side earned a 1-0 victory, keeping them sixth in Ligue 1, just a point behind fifth-placed Nantes.

Oostende snapped their three-game winless streak with a 2-0 victory over third-placed Anderlecht on Saturday, with Jali coming on as a second-half substitute to help his side preserve their lead. The three points take Oostende to 11th on the log after 26 games played. 


Manyama was again absent in Konyaspor’s match day squad for their clash against Alanyaspor, as they secured a vital 2-1 victory to leapfrog 17th-placed Osmanlispor to sit 16th on the log, a point behind Antalyaspor in the safety zone. The bottom three sides in the Turkish top-flight are relegated, with Konyaspor third-from-bottom with 13 games left in the campaign.

Mokotjo was an unused substitute as Championship side Brentford drew 1-1 against Preston North End, leaving them 10th on the table with 44 points after 31 games played.

In his first game back at LOSC Lille following his return from loan at Valenciennes, Mothiba made an immediate impact for the struggling Ligue 1 side, netting his side’s first in a 2-2 draw against fifth-placed Nantes, the point taking them two places up to 16th and safety amid the congested relegation zone in the French top-flight.

In their first league game back after the winter break, South African defender Nunes was handed his 21st start of the season, netting his first goal of the campaign in a 3-0 victory for relegation-threatened Polish club Pogon Szczecin, leaving them second-from bottom on the table with 20 points after 22 games played.

Phiri played the full 90 minutes for a second straight game as Guingamp were held to a goalless draw at home in their mid-table clash against Caen. Guingamp are 10th in Ligue 1, two points ahead of 11th-placed Caen.

Serero started his 18th league game of the season, playing the entire match as Vitesse shocked fourth-placed Feyenoord 3-1, leaving them seventh in the Dutch top-flight, but just two points behind their beaten opponents.

Singh was his club’s saviour, scoring in the fourth minute of added time to salvage a 1-1 draw for Sporting Braga against sixth-placed Leixoes in the Portuguese Second Division, leaving them 18th on the log after 24 games. Singh is his side’s top scorer with seven goals in 22 games.

Veldwijk was an unused substitute as Groningen was held to a goalless draw against Ado Den Haag, leaving them 13th on the log after 23 matches played.

Zungu is still out injured for Amiens, who are in a spot of bother following a third successive defeat, this time to Bordeaux, leaving them 17th in Ligue 1, level on points with Angers who occupy the relegation play-off spot.
