A perfect way to end the season for Mamelodi Sundowns is to win the league and cup double, according to midfielder Tiyani Mabunda.
Sundowns have not enjoyed success domestically since claiming the double in 2015/16 – the Telkom Knockout and Absa Premiership.
This season they have an opportunity to win the Nedbank Cup and the league title.
They beat National First Division outfit Cape Town All Stars in the Nedbank Cup last 32 and will be looking to win the competition for the first time since 2015, while they currently have a five-point at the top of the league standings.
“It’s actually what we are planning to do. We want to get the remaining cups here at Chloorkop,” said Mabunda, who has been one of the club’s best performing players this season.
“We have not won anything this season, so there’s only the two cups on offer. I believe we can do well and we can do that. That will prepare us for our campaign on the continent,” the former Black Leopards midfielder adds.
The last 10 matches of the season are no doubt going to test Sundowns, who have to hold their nerve to ensure they get over the finish line. Last season they dropped points towards the end of the campaign, allowing Bidvest Wits to claim their first ever title, but Mosimane’s boys have probably taken valuable lessons from that experience and will not make the same mistakes.
Sundowns’ next match is a tough one against surprise packages Free State Stars at Loftus Stadium on February 21, before they take on struggling Tshwane rivals SuperSport United three days later.
