Bucs sink Ajax to advance in Nedbank Cup

Posted: 10 February 2018 Time: 12:16

A brace by Bernard Morrison helped Orlando Pirates to a 2-0 victory over Ajax Cape Town in the Nedbank Cup last 32.

Milutin Sredojevic gave a first start of the year to the likes of Siyabonga Mpontshane, Issa Sarr and Morrison among others.

They rested the likes of Luvuyo Memela, Mpho Makola, Thabo Matlaba and Jackson Mabokgwane as look to go all the way this time around after losing the last two finals.

They started off on a good note when Sarr played in Morrison after 10 minutes, but his idea to unleash on goal was well guided by Jody February.

Former Bucs striker Tendai Ndoro then tried an audacious volley following Siyanda Zwane’s cross, but it went way over the bar two minutes later.

They then tried to catch the home side on the counterattack after Fagrie Lakay and Ndoro combined only for the latter to misguide his attempt.

The Sea Robbers went in front three minutes before the break after Justin Shonga ran from the left to play in Morrison to finish through the legs of February.

Xola Mlambo replaced the injured Diamond Thopola at the start of the second stanza in the only alteration from both sides.

Morrison continued from where he left off after breaking through the defence, shrugged off two defenders to beat February for his and the Buccaneers second of the day.

In a bid to shake up the game, Muhsin Ertugral made a double change, bringing in Tashreeq Morris and Samuel Julies.

Sredojevic responded, introducing Memela for Shonga, with Bucs firmly in control whilst Ajax chasing shadows.

Towards the closing stages, Thembinkosi Lorch found space on the right and ran through the defence but his shot was blocked following Mlambo’s exquisite assist.

Substitute Lyle Foster followed up with another clear-cut miss after being nicely set-up by Memela following a swift break attack.

The victory is sweet revenge for the Buccaneers following their 3-0 defeat two weeks ago, while they keep alive their hopes of silverware too.
