Al Ahly forward Phakamani Mahlambi had a night to remember on Thursday, netting his first official goal in Egypt, with an assist to boot, in his side’s 3-0 league victory over Arab Contractors.
The 20-year-old had not featured in a league game for his club since the end of December, missing their last seven games in succession, which prompted talk of a possible departure.
Yet after netting in a friendly against a Saudi All Stars team last week, the former Bidvest Wits attacker was handed just his third league start for the Red Devils, and took the opportunity to shine, needing just eight minutes to score the game' s opener, tucking the ball home following a cut-back from teammate Ahmed Fathi.
The Bafana Bafana starlet was in the action 16 minutes later, his diving header providing the assist for Walid Azarou to double the visitors’ lead.
Mahlambi was taken off after 66 minutes of his stellar performance, as Abdullah Said netted a third on 90 minutes to secure the comfortable 3-0 victory, increasing Al Ahly’s lead at the summit of the Egyptian Premier League standings to 12 points, while Contractors remain seventh.
Elsewhere, Lebogang Manyama did not feature in Konyaspor’s match day squad as they let a 1-0 lead slip, going down 4-1, and 6-3 on aggregate to giants Galatasaray in their Turkish Cup quarter-final.
In the Netherlands, Thulani Serero played the full 90 minutes as Vitesse lost 1-0 away at Ado Den Haag in a league encounter, leaving them seventh in the Eredivisie standings.
