Orlando Pirates coach Milutin Sredojevic appreciates the club's fans

Orlando Pirates coach Micho Sredojevic says the club’s supporters are probably the most demanding in Africa and hopes to make them smile as another cup campaign begins.

Pirates head into the Nedbank Cup looking to win their first trophy since 2014. Ironically, the last competition they won was the Nedbank Cup, when they beat Bidvest Wits at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

They reached the final of this competition last season, but they were humiliated 4-1 by SuperSport United in one of the club's most embarrassing moments in their history.

It’s the last knockout competition of the season and Bucs supporters will be hoping the side can lift the trophy to end what has been a much improved season, compared to the last, on a high.

The Buccaneers take on Ajax Cape Town in the last 32 match at Orlando Stadium on Saturday (20h15), a side they lost 3-0 to in a league encounter last week.

Micho is hoping the club’s supporters will come out in their numbers to get behind the team.

“Our supporters are spiritual owners of the team for all these long 80 years. We feel their prayers, we feel their support and demands. They are the highest demanding supporters maybe in African football and those demands push us to give the best. We are happy that they have recognised the work we are putting in order to put the team where it needs to be.

“Being a supporter myself I feel for them and I feel an extreme amount of responsibility, together with the technical team and players, to give them the best possible product.

“Them coming [to Orlando Stadium] is a sign that we are on a good road, but we are far from where we are supposed to be. Their presence has been the driving force. We are expecting our supporters to come in numbers and to give us that sense of having 12 players.”

Pirates will be looking for a much better game after the heavy defeat they suffered to the Urban Warriors.

“We are entering with the highest possible ambition but the journey to that ambition of winning is starting with the first step. There’s total concentration on the game on Saturday and we will be up to the task.”
