Royal Eagles appoint Roger Sikhakhane as Kosta Papic and Vladislav Heric head to the exits

Royal Eagles have confirmed that Roger Sikhakhane is their new head coach.

He takes over the reins from former Orlando Pirates mentor Kosta Papic, who is now negotiating his exit from the club along with his assistant Vladislav Heric.

Confusion reigned yesterday when Heric was sent by Eagles deputy chairman Shawn Mpisane to do media duties at Moses Mabhida Stadium ahead of the Nedbank Cup last-32 tie against Happy Wanderers at Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium on Sunday.

The Serbian admitted to being in the dark about reports of him and compatriot Papic being shown the door at the NFD strugglers.

Eagles general manager James Dlamini has since provided clarity.

“Our new coach is Roger Sikhakhane,” Dlamini tells

“Papic and Heric are no longer our coaches and we are negotiating now about their contracts, but they are no longer our coaches. Roger started to train the team and he started yesterday.”

Sikhakhane, who only took up a technical director role at Chippa United in January, helped the now-defunct Thanda Royal Zulu beat relegation in 2015/16 when he replaced David Bright at the club in February 2016.

He then guided Thanda to second-tier honours last season before AmaZulu bought their topflight status.

Dlamini is hoping Sikhakhane will be able to emulate the feat with third-from-bottom Eagles.

“If he can save the club from relegation we will then see what we can do moving forward. [With] Roger’s track record; we see he has saved clubs previously and then won the league the following season. We hope that occurs on our side and we’ll support along the way.”
