FA Cup match report Tottenham Hotspur v Newport County 07 February 2018

Tottenham Hotspur advanced to the fifth round of the FA Cup after defeating Newport County 2-0 in their replay at Wembley Stadium.

Victor Wanyama almost opened the scoring for Spurs with a long range effort in the ninth minute that swerved just wide of the mark.

Padraig Amond could have found the opener for Newport in the 16th minute with a header at the back post but he was flagged offside.

Dan Butler was unfortunate to net an own goal in the 27th minute after diverting Moussa Sissoko’s cross into his own net, 1-0.

Erik Lamela made it 2-0 in the 34th minute after timing his run to perfection and sweeping his low strike past goalkeeper Joe Day.

Heung-Min Son almost got the third goal six minutes before the break for Mauricio Pochettino’s charges after beating two markers to go clear one-on-one with the goalkeeper but Day came out tops.

The half ended 1-0 in favour of the North London side.

Fernando Llorente had a chance with a header 10 minutes into the second half but he could not find the target.

Lamela almost got his second goal of the match in the 65th minute after beating the offside trap to go clear on goal but Day made a great stop with his legs.

Christian Eriksen had an opportunity to bag a third goal 20 minutes before time following a cross from Danny Rose but his first time strike inside the box missed the target by inches.

Newport were holding their own with 10 minutes left to play, avoiding an embarrassing defeat for a League Two side against illustrious Premier League opponents.

Dele Alli was unlucky to rattle the crossbar five minutes before time but by then, Spurs were in full control as they ran out 2-0 winners on the night to advance to the fifth round.
