Pitso: Gomes is too emotional

Posted: 7 February 2018 Time: 15:30

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane has described Victor Gomes as a “good referee”, but says he makes mistakes when he starts getting emotional.

Mosimane was sent off by Gomes in Sundowns’ Absa Premiership match against Cape Town City last Friday, as was Citizens captain Robyn Johannes, who will miss tonight’s Nedbank Cup last 32 clash with Bidvest Wits (19h30).

Mosimane, who has previously had run-ins with Gomes on the touchline, challenged a foul that was given against Sundowns in the first half, when left-back Tebogo Langerman went in on a shoulder-to-shoulder challenge against winger Craig Martin.

The former Bafana Bafana coach will be in the stands when the Brazilians take on National First Division side Cape Town All Stars at Athlone Stadium on Friday (20h00).

“The guy [Gomes] always wants to be man of the match. He wants to be the centre of attraction and he wants that big game. He will have his collar up and his car [registration plates] have 'Mr Ref'. So you have to give him the space, let him gloat, it’s okay,” Mosimane said.

“I questioned him for a shoulder-to-shoulder [challenge]. I never swore at him. I never swear at referees, you can ask them. I could be loud and that’s in relation to the game and what type of game it is, the scoreboard. I said to him it’s a shoulder-to-shoulder.”

Mosimane later said: “But let me tell you something about Gomes – he is a good referee. He is a good referee, but he makes mistakes and I think he [needs] a little bit of counselling. Why does he make mistakes? Because he becomes emotional. He is hyper. You are not the centre of attraction, stay low. That’s when he makes mistakes. But in Africa [CAF competitions] he is so cool, so calm. Maybe Ace [Ncobo] must mentor these guys.

“He can say the same thing about me because we are allowed to comment.”

Mosimane, meanwhile, is likely to be without Khama Billiat and captain Hlompho Kekana, who both have minor knocks, for the clash against All Stars.
