Maritzburg United centre-back Bevan Fransman expects new signings William Twala and Bokang Thlone to make their mark at the top-eight contenders.
Maritzburg last month recruited winger Twala (loan) from Kaizer Chiefs and defender Thlone from Bidvest Wits respectively, with the pair struggling for game-time at their former teams.
Twala made his United debut off the bench in the 2-1 loss to Orlando Pirates at Orlando Stadium on the weekend, while Thlone could only make his bow at the end of the season as he nurses a serious knee injury.
The Team of Choice recently sold star striker Evans Rusike to SuperSport United and their captain Denis Weidlich to Wits. And while Fransman admits the duo were key players for the team, he backs Twala and Thlone to help ease the blow of their departure.
"That’s football, players come and players go. 'Danso' was a quality defender and a great leader, and Evans was a fantastic goal-scorer. But we know the club has to do business to stay afloat,” Fransman told his club's website.
"William Twala is an experienced campaigner, so I expect him to come in a make a positive impact. Once Thlone gets fit, we’ll also have a nice natural left-footer in the side which we need. We just have to continue and keep pushing forward, keep focusing on the job at hand which is to claim a top-eight finish.”
Meanwhile, Fransman was honoured to be handed the armband again by coach Fadlu Davids following Weidlich's exit.
“I’ve always seen myself as a senior player in the side and have tried to guide the younger boys and be a leader as much as I can,” said Fransman.
“So taking over from where Denis left off, I just have to continue leading the team forward and helping the young players. It’s a great honour following on from previous skippers like Denis, Kurt Lentjies and Shu-aib Walters.”
Davids' side next face Swallows FC in a Nedbank Cup last-32 match at Dobsonville Stadium on Saturday (15h30).
