Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela believes defender Eric Mathoho will soon return to his best and re-establish himself at Naturena.

Mathoho made only his 11th appearance of the season when he was drafted into the team for the suspended Teenage Hadebe against Bidvest Wits over the weekend.

The 27-year-old centre-back has struggled for form since the end of last season, picking up a red card against SuperSport United in late August, before being sent off two weeks later for Bafana Bafana against Cape Verde.

During his rare appearance against the Clever Boys on Saturday evening, ‘Tower’ was at fault when he allowed Lehlohonolo Majoro to get ahead of him to score the equalising goal and subsequently leave Chiefs seven points adrift of log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

However, Komphela felt the lanky defender “held his own” and will soon get back to the form that earned him a place in the national team.

“He’s done fairly well, it could have been better. Unfortunately, any defence is judged on clean sheets, and we regret that we conceded [against Wits],” said Komphela.

“But Tower held his own. I think he’s getting there and he will soon get to the top of his performances.”

Amakhosi last month sent Lorenzo Gordinho out on loan to Bloemfontein Celtic, as part of the deal that saw midfielder Kabelo Mahlasela move in the opposite way, leaving Komphela with only four centre-backs to compete for the available three places in the starting line-up.
