A second-half penalty by Benni McCarthy has all but ensured Blackburn Rovers keep their English Premiership status next season.
Rovers manager Sam Allardyce has always believed 40 points would be enough to stay up, and they achieved that mark by overcoming Portsmouth 2-0 at Ewood Park.
Goals from Morten Gamst Pedersen and McCarthy in each half saw Blackburn maintain their good home record. They have lost only one of 10 League games on their own patch since Allardyce arrived as manager in December.
It proved the perfect tonic for McCarthy, who on Thursday was dropped from Bafana Bafana's Confederations Cup squad.
