Steenberg United FC coach Mike Lukhubene has confirmed that the club have roped in former Orlando Pirates striker Lennox Bacela.
The Western Cape ABC Motsepe club, who currently lie second in the standings, are pushing for promotion while are also in the last 32 of this year’s Nedbank Cup, and have turned to the experience of Bacela to help them for the remainder of the season.
“Yes, we spoke to him and agreed terms and everything, and we will see if we are able to register him before the weekend,” Lukhubene said of the 34-year-old. “There is a 50-50 percent chance he’ll play this weekend.
“He has been training with us since Monday.”
The Cape club are hoping to have the former University of Pretoria frontman available for this weekend’s Nedbank Cup clash against Orbit College FC, having overcome a long and arduous journey to this stage of the competition.
“It’s been a long, difficult and bumpy road, but by God’s grace we managed to get where we are today,” Lukhubene said. “We have very young boys, who have a dream of showing themselves and what they can do in football.
“We’ve played six games to get to this stage, the last 32. We were in a group, won the group, then got to the semi-finals, then the finals of the ABC Motsepe League, and then had to play a Castle League team to get where we are now. And I have to thank my players and management – we are here because of them.”
Kick-off at Parow Park on Saturday is set for 15h30.
