Steve Komphela says Kaizer Chiefs must attack to stay in the Absa Premiership race

With the Absa Premiership having reached its final third, Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela says their only option now is to attack.

Chiefs currently sit seven points adrift of log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, after being held to a share of the spoils against title holders Bidvest Wits over the weekend.

With just 10 games to go, and 30 points to play for, Komphela remains hopeful and says the only way they can remain in the running for the crown is by attacking and scoring goals.

“We have to attack, my man. If we want to win the championship, we have to attack and score goals – that’s all,” stated Komphela.

The Amakhosi faithful have been left frustrated with the limited game-time afforded to new signings Siphelele Ntshangase and Leonardo Castro, who have yet to get starting berths, but Komphela has explained the dilemma he is currently facing.

“You’re always tempted [to play your new signings]. And you’re saying, if you start with Castro, do you put [Ryan] Moon outside? He scored [again]. If you start Ntshangase, maybe ‘Shabba’ [Siphiwe Tshabalala] out? That’s another dynamic,” he defended.

“Do you then go with two numbers 10s, where you play Ntshangase and Shabba and sacrifice a striker? That’s another thing.

“It depends on the game itself, but their contribution is quite clear. Their fitness is there, and you can see their contribution by how they exert. They can even play more minutes compared to when they arrived.”
