Italy U21 coach Luigi Di Biagio has been named as interim head coach of the Italy senior national team to oversee the internationals against Argentina and England next month.
The announcement comes straight after acting sub-commissioner of the Italian FA (FIGC) Alessandro Costacurta revealed that Chelsea head coach Antonio Conte and Zenit St Petersburg boss Roberto Mancini rejected the chance to fill the head coach vacancy.
The Azzurri have been on the look out for a new appointment since the departure of Gian Piero Ventura, who failed to lead the European giants to the World Cup, for the first time in 60 years.
Di Biagio, 46, represented the Italian national team 31 times and featured at the 1998 and 20002 World Cup, as well as Euro 2000 where they were pipped to the title by France by virtue of the Golden Goal.
The former Internazionale and AS Roma midfielder has been in charge of the U21 side for the past five years.
Italy play Argentina in Manchester on March 23 and England at Wembley four days later.
