Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela hopes Philani Zulu's injury is not serious

Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela is hopeful Philani Zulu’s injury is nothing serious, despite the defender being stretchered off against Bidvest Wits on Saturday.

Zulu received what looked to be a nasty knock to the ankle, before being replaced by Leonardo Castro shortly after the hour mark in their 1-1 draw at Bidvest Stadium.

The former Maritzburg United fullback was taken straight to the change room before limping out from the tunnel a few minutes later.

Komphela was uncertain of the exact extent of Zulu’s injury but was hopeful that his first-choice left-back would be okay.

“I don’t want to commit. We still have to go to our medics and check, but his ankle got twisted. I hope it’s nothing major,” said Komphela.

With Tsepo Masilela yet to fully recover from ankle surgery he underwent last year, Chiefs are left thin in terms of options at left-back, with Sibusiso Khumalo seemingly out of favour.

However, Komphela believes veteran attacker Siphiwe Tshabalala and newly promoted Siphosakhe Ntiya-Ntiya are both capable of being deployed in the left wing-back position.

“We have Ntiya-Ntiya; we can still play somebody there – ‘Shabba’ did very well there [against Wits]. We’re okay,” he concluded.
