Referee Tony Chapron has received a six-month ban for kicking Nantes' Diego Carlos during the side's Ligue 1 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in January.
The match official was seen swinging a leg out at the midfielder after they collided in the middle of the park, before he inexplicably sent the Brazilian off by producing a second yellow card and subsequent red.
Carlos has subsequently had his suspension overturned and the French Football Federation have taken action against the referee, handing him a six-month ban, half of which is suspended.
A brief statement from Pascal Garibian, technical director of France's refereeing body, said: "We take note of the decision of the Disciplinary Committee of the Professional Football League.
"After he has served his suspension, Tony Chapron will again be available to the DTA [France's refereeing body] who can designate him Ligue 1 or Ligue 2 games."
