Maritzburg United chairman Farook Kadodia challenges striking duo

Maritzburg United chairman Farook Kadodia has challenged Mohau Mokate and Andrea Fileccia to step up their efforts upfront following the sale of Evans Rusike to SuperSport United.

Rusike scored eight times this season before joining SuperSport this week in a deal thought to be worth R5 million.

The Zimbabwean bagged 21 goals in 80 appearances in a two-and-a-half year spell with Maritzburg, having joined the side from Hwange FC in his homeland.

Rusike will perhaps best be remembered at the Team of Choice for his relegation-defying brace in the last game of the 2015/16 season against Jomo Cosmos in Potchefstroom. He was subsequently named the club's player of the season with nine goals in all competitions.

Kadodia has faith Mokate and Belgian hitman Fileccia can rise to the fore in Rusike's absence.

"As a club we'll also give this opportunity to other strikers, namely Fileccia and Mokate to take this opportunity in filling the big shoes left by Evans Rusike," Kadodia said of the pair, who have netted five goals between them this season.

He added: "Also there'll be some exciting players that'll be joining Maritzburg United at the beginning of the new season. We are very confident that there'll be more players coming from this stream of Maritzburg.

"When we grow these players here there has to be a benefit because we cannot sustain the whole football project in Maritzburg without trading players. This deal here has been after two-and-a-half years that we have sold the player.

"Having said that, we appeal to the fans to rally behind the team. We are still challenging where our goal is. You know our goal is a strong top-eight position. The coach has been fulfilling his obligation as far as sitting in that position and I think we need the support from now on to ensure that we can stay where we are in the log."
