Pique: Barcelona or retirement

Posted: 3 February 2018 Time: 13:45

Gerard Pique has revealed he would have retired from professional football had Barcelona not offered him a contract extension.

The Spain international was in the final year-and-a-half of his contract at the Nou Camp prior to the Catalan club handing him a renewed deal which will now take him through to the end of the 2021/22 campaign.

And Pique, who has already announced he will retire from international football after this year's World Cup, has said he would have hung up his playing boots instead of joining any other club.

“Staying at the club [Barcelona] was always natural for me,” Pique told reporters.

“This has always been my home and I would have no plans to move to any other club, that is the simple truth.

“The best thing about my time here has been the success and the trophies – at least one every season, and we always fight until the end.

“I want to retire at the club, it is a case of Barcelona or nothing for me – I don’t want to be anywhere else, I would not be motivated and if it were not for this club then I would retire.

“Hopefully this is not my last contract – I want to enjoy today and the happiness but there is a long way left, I hope.”
