Kaizer Chiefs fullback Kgotso Moleko has stressed the importance of remaining within reach of Absa Premiership leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

Chiefs will visit Bidvest Stadium on Saturday evening to meet with current league champions Bidvest Wits, with kick-off set for 18h00.

Amakhosi are presently in third position on the log – five points behind Sundowns, who visit Cape Town City on Friday evening (20h00).

Moleko believes scoring first will be crucial to their chances of beating the Clever Boys, which in turn is paramount to their bid for a first championship in three years.

“We have to win. We are close to log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns and we want to minimise the points gap,” Moleko told his club's website.

“They [Wits] are going to try to score first, after which they can play their game, that’s why we have to make sure that we are the ones who will put the ball in the back of the net first.

“They have a good side and a good coach. We just have to be ready and focused.”

The 28-year-old former Bloemfontein Celtic defender has seen limited game-time this season, with Joseph Molangoane being deployed at right-back in coach Steve Komphela's new 3-5-2 system.

With Molangoane having been ruled out through suspension, Moleko made his return over the weekend as Chiefs were held to a 0-0 draw by The Brazilians, and says he is more than ready to step up when called upon.

“I always have to be ready when called upon. It went well, despite lacking a bit of match fitness, because of not having played much," he added.

"As a result of this, I felt some muscle strain towards the end of the Sundowns game, especially as we were really pushing, trying to win it.”
