Micho backs signings, challenges Sangweni

Orlando Pirates coach Milutin Sredojevic is confident the club’s January recruits will “add quality and value” to his team, while admitting Thamsanqa Sangweni needs to raise his game.

The Buccaneers added four members to their squad over the past month, roping in Chippa United duo Diamond Thopola and Phetso Maphanga, while also concluding the late signings of Bidvest Wits midfielder Xola Mlambo and Zambia’s Augustine Mulenga.

Speaking about the recently-concluded transfer window, ‘Micho’ says he’s eager to work with the new members of his squad, who he feels are a welcome addition to the club.

“The transfer window recently closed,” he said. “We as a technical team have been fully focused on the players we have in order to make them competitive. From now on we will have all the players that we bought available, but we don’t have much time – the competitions continue, we have the Martizburg game coming up, and then a cup game.

“But I believe the players we have brought will add quality and value that will succeed in filling the mosaic of our team so that we move towards the end of the season keeping our ambitions intact.”

Speculation has surrounded July recruit Sangweni, who following an injury-laden six months at the club, has only made three starts for the Bucs, the last being two months ago in a goalless draw against SuperSport United.

Sredojevic says Sangweni is still very much part of the club’s plans, despite recent links to AmaZulu, but concedes the midfielder needs to step it up.

“He is absolutely in our plans,” Sredojevic said. “He is one of the players competing for a central midfield position, and the moment succeeds in reaching the criteria and standard we are looking for in our team, he will be there. We have great respect for his human and football qualities.”

Pirates are next in action on Saturday evening when they host Maritzburg United at Orlando Stadium.

Kick-off is set for 20h15.
