Kaizer Chiefs centre-back Daniel Cardoso will always be grateful to coach Steve Komphela for giving him his breakthrough in professional football.

Cardoso, who bounced between youth academies at Jomo Cosmos, Orlando Pirates and Bidvest Wits, was considering quitting the game before he was persuaded by his late father Antonio to go for a trial at Free State Stars.

Komphela was in charge of Ea Lla Koto at the time and Cardoso managed to win his favour, going on to make his topflight debut in the 2012/13 season.

Cardoso later followed Komphela to Chiefs in July 2015.

"He gave me my breakthrough,” Cardoso told Amakhosi's website. “If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be where I am now.”

The 29-year-old had his doubters when coming through the Wits ranks, which included SuperSport United mentor Eric Tinkler. However, Tinkler converted Cardoso from a striker to his current position of expertise.

“I had always been a striker, scoring quite a number of goals, so I wasn’t too happy at first,” said Cardoso.

“But it eventually worked out well. I love this position, because of the responsibilities and the demands it comes with.”

He also credits ex-Glamour Boys left-back Bradley Carnell for helping him make the grade.

"I was at some stage without a club and participated in a tournament in Soweto. Bradley saw me play. He was thereafter always convinced that I would make it and started to help me."

Cardoso initially struggled for game-time on his arrival at Naturena as an injury halted his progress. But he is currently enjoying his best season with the Soweto giants, registering 22 appearances in all competitions.

Komphela's side tomorrow visit Wits at Bidvest Stadium (18h00).
