Spanish Copa del Rey semi-final first leg match report FC Barcelona vs Valencia 02 February 2018

Posted: 2 February 2018 Time: 00:06

Barcelona secured a 1-0 win over Valencia in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final on Thursday night.

Barca secured their spot in the last four by seeing off Espanyol, while Valencia overcame Alaves in the last round.

The Catalan giants carved the game's first chance in the 19th minute when Lionel Messi was played through on goal, but he failed to direct his shot on target.

Despite the home side's dominance, Valencia managed to remain resolute to deny the visitors an opening goal.

That proved to be the trend for the rest of the opening stanza, as Valencia shot-stopper Jaume Doménech endured a quiet first half.

The deadlock was eventually broken in the 67th minute courtesy of a fine header from Luis Suarez, following a cross from Messi.

Valverde's charges managed to carve out a couple more chances with Messi and Coutinho going close after 76 minutes.

Valencia managed to create a golden chance in the 89th minute but Santi Mina failed to direct his header on target at the far post.

That proved to be the final chance of the half as Barca take a 1-0 lead into the second leg at the Mestalla.
