Luis Suarez defends Philippe Coutinho after lacklustre La Liga debut for Barcelona on Sunday

Luis Suarez has defended Barcelona team-mate and La Liga debutant Philippe Coutinho after the forward's lacklustre showing at the weekend.

The Brazil international made his full debut in the Spanish top-flight on Sunday, having previously come off the bench for Barca in their Copa del Rey win last week.

However, Coutinho - who joined from Liverpool at the start of January - lacked his usual cutting edge, although Suarez insists it will take time for Coutinho to settle in La Liga.

“It’s difficult to debut in the Camp Nou in the league,” Suarez said following this weekend's 2-1 win over Alaves.

“Philippe was very good. He did very well trying to drive in the game and the team are happy with his contribution.”
