Bloemfontein Celtic denied Cape Town City the opportunity to close the gap on Mamelodi Sundowns after they drew 1-1 on Sunday afternon.
City were eager to reduce the deficit on Sundowns at the top of the standings and leapfrog Orlando Pirates in second place.
They provided the game’s first shot on goal in the sixth minute through Ayanda Patosi who forced Patrick Tignyemb into a save.
Defender Tariq Fielies was next to threaten the Celtic goal after his header off Patosi’s corner found the upright, with Roland Putsche unable to capitalise on the follow-up with his shot going over the bar.
Deon Hotto blasted in a free-kick from outside the box that rattled the back of the goal-posts 10 minutes before the break.
The Citizens broke the deadlock through an own goal from Tshepo Rikhotso who was caught facing his own goal before diverting the ball into his own net following Thabo Nodada’s cross in the 40th minute.
The confidence of the home side started to get to them, but they started the second half promisingly and missed a few chances.
Hotto went close again to scoring but he scuffed his attempt 60 minutes in the clash.
Tignyemb was called into action once again to deny Nodada from the right side.
The home side found the leveller thanks to Ndumiso Mabena, who stepped up to convert a free-kick into the top left corner 15 minutes from time.
With time running out, both sides searched for the winner but it wasn’t forthcoming as they settled for a share of the spoils in the city of roses.
