Sono: My hands were tied

Jomo Cosmos boss Jomo Sono says he had no choice but to sell star duo Linda Mntambo and Mxolisi Macuphu to Chippa United this month.
While Chippa coach Teboho Moloi felt Sono exhibited his love for him by releasing the pair, 'Mjomane' pointed out their contracts were due to expire at the end of the season so it made sense to cash in.
Sono says he encountered the same situation when he sold the likes of Anthony Laffor, Reneilwe Letsholonyane and Morgan Gould in years gone by.
"To lose those two players, the team has taken a knock," admitted Sono, whose side have slipped eight points behind NFD leaders Highlands Park after going three matches without a win.
"But our hands were tied, there was nothing I could do because they were left with four months on their contracts. So they had to go.
"If a player comes to you and says, 'You sell me now or I go for free in May', and? I mean I had the same experience with Anthony Laffor [to SuperSport United], it was the same. He came to us and said, 'I'm left with four months', and what did I say? 'Don't play in those four months'. And in the end we lost him.
"It was 'Yeye' [to Kaizer Chiefs], the same. Morgan Gould [to SuperSport], the same. So once you are caught in that situation there's nothing you can do, nothing you can do.
"So for the sake of the club I had to release them or at least get some money out of them, because four months down the line they are free. So at least we got that little bit of money that'll maintain the club, but I didn't want them to go.
"We offered them heaven and earth [but] already Chippa had signed them on pre-contracts. Once the player signs a pre-contract he's gone. It's like uhlala nomfazi wakho but uyazi ngo June uyoshada nenye indoda [you have a wife but you know in June she's leaving you to marry someone else]. And what are you going to do? It's difficult.
"What are you still staying with her for? And so that was the situation I was faced with."
