Ntsikelelo Nyauza is having arguably his best season at Orlando Pirates, all thanks to a change in position.
Now playing at the heart of the defence having previously occupied the right back position, Nyauza says he is enjoying his game much more than he did when he played on the right side of the back four.
“The change for has been great, not that it’s my first time playing there. I used to play in the position from my academy days, so I have idea what is required when you play in central defence. As a centre back, you need to be able to communicate, stay disciplined and focused throughout the game. A game is won by defenders a lot of the time. If the defence is solid and does not concede, there’s chances of drawing or winning, so it’s important to stay focused.
Nyauza has found the back of the net three times in all competitions this season and is inspired to get more. He says he watches the likes of Sergio Ramos, Gerard Pique and Nicolas Otamendi, central defenders who have become famous for scoring from set pieces in the opposition half.
“As a team it’s good when you see defenders scoring goals. You find good centre backs around the world who score, like Pique, Ramos and Otamendi. Scoring
“I look at those players. In order to be the best you need to look at the best in the world, so that you appluy knowledge and experience
Nyauza is happy with how Pirates have performed this season, especially after the disastrous campaig nlast term.
“I am very happy because everyone can see that we are playing much better football this season. The coaches have brought in new tactics, there’s a balance in the team and we are solid at the back. So far so good.”
Sixth-placed Pirates are yet to suffer a defeat in 2018 and next take on bottom of the table Platinum Stars. The match will be played at Royal Bafokeng Stadium tomorrow (18h00).
