Lebohang Maboe says Evans Rusike and company are playing with confidence

Posted: 26 January 2018 Time: 18:30

Maritzburg United midfielder Lebohang Maboe reckons the likes of Evans Rusike and Andrea Fileccia are riding a wave of confidence in the final third.

Maritzburg went eight games without scoring earlier in the season, but ended the drought in style with a 4-2 win over title contenders Cape Town City in December.

The Team of Choice have continued to cause damage upfront in 2018, scoring nine goals in four games, which included a 4-0 rout of Bloemfontein Celtic and 3-0 thumping of Free State Stars last time out.

Zimbabwean hitman Rusike is leading the charge for Fadlu Davids' side with seven goals in all competitions, while Belgian strike partner Fileccia has struck twice in the previous three matches.

“It’s confidence in the final third, it’s about believing how good you are,” Maboe told the club's website when asked about the team's form up front.

“Once you believe that, the confidence comes, and I think that’s where our strikers are right now, the way they have been playing this year.

“And the good thing also is that all of the strikers are scoring, so it makes for good competition.”

Meanwhile, Maboe believes he has become a marked man and is working on upping his contribution, having scored twice and bagged four assists.

“I feel like teams sometimes plan to make it tough for me, so I feel I need to always up my game, to see how I can improve my performances.

“I want to get myself in good positions to receive the ball in space so I can penetrate and help my team moving forward, as well as helping them in defence. I’ll find a solution for it and keep working hard.”

United, in fifth place on the Premiership standings after 18 fixtures, are in action tonight against mid-table Chippa United at Harry Gwala Stadium. Kick-off is at 20h00.

The 23-year-old everpresent is determined to help his team collect three points on home soil.

“Chippa, they have got a very good defensive record. It’s going to be hard playing against them, but we are determined to make our supporters happy.

“We’ve won quite a lot of our games away and we want to improve on our home record. We have to get the three points for our supporters.”
