Baroka FC midfielder Gift Motupa has set a target of 10 goals this season

Baroka FC midfielder Gift Motupa is closing in on the target he set himself at the start of the season.

On loan from Orlando Pirates, Motupa wants to score 10 goals this season and is just four away from the mark with more than 10 matches still to play in this campaign.

Since joining Baroka from the Buccaneers, Motupa has played 15 matches in all competitions, which is six more than he managed all of last season at his parent club.

His performances earned him a contract extension at Pirates, who exercised the one-year option in his deal. He will go back to the Buccaneers ready to fight for his position, after getting regular game-time and confidence in his home province.

“I set a target of 10 goals. I know it will lift up my confidence and then I will take it from there next season,” the 23-year-old tells KickOff.com.

“Remember this is the first time I play consistently in the PSL. So if I get 10 goals, I will be happy and I can build from there. When I get to my target, then I can aim higher.”

With a few months left in the season, Motupa is hoping Baroka can finish in the top six and impress in the Nedbank Cup.

He was part of the Pirates side that got to the final last season against SuperSport United in Durban, but he did not get to play. So getting there with Baroka, who have been in the semi-finals twice, would be a dream come true for him. Bakgaga will take on Platinum Stars in the last 32.

“I think it’s possible [to get to the final]. Any team in the PSL has an opportunity to get there. We just need to be focused, we should not get excited. I don’t think the Nedbank Cup will distract us in the league. It would be nice to be in the final. I just wish we can get there.”

Baroka, who are in seventh place, take on 10th-placed Golden Arrows in the Absa Premiership at Princess Magogo Stadium on Sunday (15h30).
