Cape Town City’s Kwanda Mngonyama eager to kick on after failed Mamelodi Sundowns stint

Cape Town City defender Kwanda Mngonyama says he’s eager to start afresh after a forgettable stay with PSL giants Mamelodi Sundowns.

The former junior international captain was signed by the Citizens in late December, ending a miserable four-and-a-half-year stay at Chloorkop in which he failed to represent his parent club once, being loaned out initially to Bidvest Wits before a further three loan moves to Maritzburg United.

Having sat on the sidelines in Pretoria for the first six months of this season, City brought in the 24-year-old to bolster their backline, with the defender delighted to put his past behind him as he looks to work his way into the City starting line-up.

“I was very excited when Cape Town City gave me a call,” Mngonyama says. “I was there at Sundowns for six months just training, and it was not an easy situation, but I managed to deal with it. Now I am here, and am here to work for the team, for the badge, myself and my family as well.”

Having made two substitute appearances so far since his move to Cape Town, Mngonyama knows he has his work cut out in rising above Robyn Johannes, Taariq Fielies and Tshepo Gumede in the pecking order, and feels City have a strong squad to push for silverware come the end of the campaign.

“I am not here for a holiday, I am here to work,” he says. “I am always ready and prepared to work all the time.

“Cape Town City has a good squad, and so hopefully we have more chances to win titles.”

Mngonyama will hope to crack the nod for his side’s next fixture, a league encounter away at Bloemfontein Celtic on Sunday afternoon.
