Chippa United defender Kristopher Bergman says the club have strengthened the squad with "real talent" and hard-working players.

Chippa have been active in the January transfer window, bringing in Fares Hachi, Linda Mntambo, Mxolisi Macuphu, Bantu Mzwakali and Thabo Rakhale.

Bergman believes the Chilli Boys are on the rise after narrowly surviving relegation last season courtesy of goal difference.

“Our intention this season is to finish higher up on the log table, and we have more than a capable team to achieve that,” Bergman told United's website.

“We have also strengthened the squad with real talent and players with a great work ethic. We have all the resources to rise.”

Bergman has embraced the increased competition for game-time at the Port Elizabeth-based outfit.

“As footballers we want to play every game and quite often, it is not possible.

“It is important that as a player you stay focused and when you are called up, you are in a good state both mentally and physically to deliver on the pitch.”

Teboho Moloi's side, who drew 0-0 with Golden Arrows last time out, are eighth on the table with  24 points from 18 games, and next visit fifth-placed Maritzburg United at Harry Gwala Stadium on Friday.
